Our goal is to construct a new, state-of-the-art, 25K sq. ft. expansion to complement the current skate park in Truckee, California.

Skateparks are a vibrant, creative part of sustainably healthy communities. As a gathering place for dedicated, athletic youth, the RMSP will expand the forum for visitors young and old, beginning and skilled, to meet and share experiences. For many skateboarding youth, the skatepark becomes a home-away-from-home.

Sense of Belonging

More than anyone, young people need to feel like they are recognized and appreciated by their communities. A first-of-its-kind study of skateboarding culture reveals that skateboarding improves mental health, fosters community, and encourages diversity and resilience. Skateparks can be seen as a playground, a gym, a creative laboratory, a community center, and much more.

Important Community Goal Posts for RMSP:

Free: unrestricted public access during park hours.
Accessible: the park is located at a geographic and walkable recreation center of Truckee with the Legacy Trail, Regional Park and existing paved paths making it easy for people to feel comfortable walking (or riding) to the park.
Professional: Our community has a high-level of skill and expertise and so the RMSP plans were developed by Zach Wormhoudt, one of the top designers in the industry, to provide a park experience that is challenging and exciting for all.

Engaged: Local users are currently involved in the advocacy, fundraising, and design stages which fosters community pride and stewardship. The expanded skatepark will be a venue for community jams, programs, and workshops.
Inclusive: The skatepark is located in the Regional Park where a wide variety of public activities are already occurring adding expanded opportunities to community activities.
Diverse: The design of the park meets the needs of Truckee’s board community serving a wide range of experience and skill levels.

THE HISTORY of the TRUCKEE SKATEPARK EXPANSION

In 2010 a group of local skateboarders saw the expansion of the skateboarding in Truckee/Tahoe and the congestion it caused at the small, local skatepark. This initial group had the simple goal of providing lighting for the current park so the park could stay open later. Funds and awareness were raised within the community. When the town declined to add lights, ideas turned to expanding the park.

Steve "Rocker" Anderson.

As a longtime local skater and advocate for improvements at the Truckee Skate Park, Rocker became a catalyst for a larger plan when he passed in Dec 2012. Rocker’s friends banded together formally to build a memorial bowl. In 2013, they approached CharitySmith about a memorial fund and Rocker Memorial Skatepark (RMSP) became official.

The Rocker Memorial Skatepark will be built in honor of a friend of the community, Steve “Rocker” Anderson. Lost in to an inbound avalanche at Donner Ski Ranch in 2012, Rocker was a lifelong skater and doer of rad deeds. During his tour of duty in Kuwait he built a skate ramp for the troops to give them a familiar place to hang out while so far from home.

The grassroots Truckee Skatepark Lighting & Expansion team united with RMSP to discuss the use of the adjacent lot with the park district for a larger, more accommodating skatepark. In 2015, TDRPD approved our plan and granted use of the land on the corner of Estates Drive and Brockway Road adjacent to the existing skatepark. And in June 2022 all permitting was finalized. Now all we need to do is raise construction funds. If we can reach our goal, we can start building as early as Summer 2024.
